‘Idiot Boyfriend’ is an 8 episode short series that will leave audiences dumb-founded. Based on the gag manga of the same name written by Masahiro Totsuka and with art by Saki Azumi It follows the day to day life of Akomi Netsuki, a high school student and her college boyfriend, Ponta Ninomiya. At first glance it looks like Ponta has it all, he’s tall, his hair is perfect and his face is gorgeous, only problem is that he’s incredibly dumb. The 8 episodes, ranging from 4-10 minutes long, are absolutely hilarious as Ponta and Akomi navigate their lives together.
What an Idiot Boyfriend is like….
I really recommend audiences to watch this series casually. The second you start taking it seriously, is the second you’ll start disliking it. The series jumps all over the place, one episode is about Akomi telling Ponta her trouble over her future plans, and the next is Ponta and his equally stupid and gorgeous friends discussing global warming or deforestation! The series also features one of the most
horrendous unique theme songs I’ve ever heard.
I gotta admit, there were some moments that I face palmed incredibly hard. Mainly when Ponta was more concerned about the food to rice ratio while Akomi was discussing her life plans. But again, the series is not one to be taken seriously. It would have been interesting to learn a bit more about Ponta’s friends, and even what his High School life was like. Also the secret romance geek in me, would have liked some romantic scenes between Ponta and Akomi. Overall, good series to pass some time with, but nothing incredibly outstanding 3/5
