All Out, Gakuen Handsome, Nanbaka & Cheating Craft: Fall Impressions 2016 Part 2

It’s part 2 of my Impressions series. You can read Part 1 here, which discussed Yuri on Ice, Trickster, Tiger Mask W and To be HERO.

At the end I’ll let you know which ones I’ll be keeping up with🙂 You can check out the full list of fall anime series at Anichart. Just a quick rundown of my voting scales:

0-2: Wow that’s part of my life I’ll never get back

2-3: Reasonable, would need to watch the next one or two episodes to see if it’s worth continuing

4-5: That was absolutely fantastic! Give me the next episode now!

All Out

I had really high expectations for this series. Rugby is a really big sport where I live, and everyone has a team. I never got really into rugby (despite weekly family bets), so I was excited to watch an anime that could (finally!) explain the damn rules to me. Episode 1 wasn’t particularly stand out. We’re introduced to a chibi-chan and a tree trunk-kun. Chibi chan is inspired by rugby, as it’s a sport where “anyone can be the star”. Chibi chan convinces Tree Trunk-kun to get over a past trauma and join the club.

Sure the animation was pretty, but the story and the characters were pretty standard. BUT what really irked me is that the voices are really odd. Especially one of the football club senpais – he sounds like he just woke up, and speaks really slow. I know it’s something that is going to be on my nerves. Anywho, for a first episode, it’s a pretty solid 3/5.

Gakuen Handsome

A young boy transfers into a new school, and everyone is gorgeous. Joking, but not really, I mean look at dat chin. The series is based off a video game, and plans to have 12 episodes, about 3 minutes each. It’s just a fun, silly BL series which is great to laugh at. Overall 4/5

It’s the world’s most secure prison, and 4 idiots are trying to break out of it. Introducing Nico, Juugo, Uno and Rokku, 4 of anime’s most unique characters, in a prison-school like setting, without the girls. In the mix are also the poor prison guards who try to keep the prison running. The first episode was pretty great, there was heaps of gags, but also the introduction of an important plot point. I would have liked the series a lot more if there wasn’t unnecessary glitter in every scene. Overall a 4/5

Cheating Craft

Except when the test is life or death

The National exam makes or breaks your life. You either move to the mainland and live in luxury or stay behind and live a mundane life. With such a crazy exam, there’s going to be people who study, people who cheat and people who do a bit of both. The first episode was about 10 minutes long ( with 12 planned episodes), and introduced us to the University system. To be honest I felt that the entire 10 minutes could have been cut down to a 2 minute summary. Seems like an interesting series but will have to give it another shot 2.5/5

  1. I agree that ep 1 of Cheating Craft could have been cut down to a brief summary. It really doesn’t feel like the episode accomplished much. Maybe some of that will become important later but it was pretty ordinary to watch as you just kept hoping it would get over the intro and into the story. The only other one on your list that I’ve tried is Nanbaka and I liked the first episode but given the set up I’m not counting on me sticking the show out. Thanks for sharing.
