My Awful Cab Experience

So at first I wasn’t sure if I should share this story. But as I’ve mentioned a few times in my personal posts, I find writing about it helps me work through my emotions. I just want to say at the outset that I wasn’t harmed, and I did get home safe. As many of you know, I’ve spent the last 3 weeks overseas and been having an incredible time. I returned back to Melbourne on Tuesday (25th). Flying from Tokyo to Melbourne is about an 11 hour flight, and by the time I arrived at Melbourne airport I was absolutely knackered. I decided to catch a cab. To get back home normally i would have had to take the SkyBus (about 40 minute drive to the city), then catch a train and then a 15 minute walk home. So cab it was.

After a long wait at the taxi stand I’m directed to a cab, and get in. Usually I sit at the front of the cab with the driver, but this time something told me to sit at the back. So I did, and I’m really glad I did. As we drive off my cabbie is really chatty. He begins to ask me where I visited and I told him Japan. As soon as I mention Japan he starts talking about girls getting dropped and how they take pictures up their skirts. It’s not a subject I know a lot about so I just mentioned that they had women only carriages and other initiatives to protect women. He then begins to talk about the porn industry in general and also different fetishes. By this point, I’m just thinking he’s talking generally, and it’s nothing to be worried about.

He then starts asking me about if I had a boyfriend, and I responded no. He began to ask me when the last time I had a boyfriend was, and I said I dated someone a few years ago. His response was “damn you haven’t had sex in ages! You’re just like me!” This is when alarm bells began to sound. He then started to talk about how lonely he was, and how horny he was. For a few moments I was really shocked, but then I went into a survival(?) mode where my emotions shut down and my brain was working out the best way to get out of there quickly. So I began to respond to his questions with yes or no, and had my hand on my phone the entire time, ready to speed dial my mum if anything happened. After about 20 minutes of me responding ‘yes’ and ‘no’, at a traffic light he turns around, leans towards me and whispers “I’m ready for a round with you right now if you want.”Β I almost vomitted.

He began to ask me if I drink or do drugs. I told him ‘no’ to both, and his response was “I love clean girls like you”. I’m pretty sure he also told me that he could hook me up with some drugs if I wanted to. By this point we were about 10 minutes from my apartment and I was getting increasingly terrified. He again asked me if I wanted him to come up to my room “for a round”, I said “no, I don’t want to”, he asked me why, and I figured best course of action was not to offend him. I said I was tired from the flight, stressed and just wanted to go to sleep. He said that “I can work out all the tension in your body.” I gripped my phone even harder, and wondered if I would get out of this cab safe.

Finally we pulled up near my apartment, He asked if I wanted his number, and I quickly got it, so I could leave. I had the door open even before we stopped so I could dash out if needed. He then asked a third time if he could come up, I said no and his response was “aww but I’ve been a good boy.” He gave me his number, and I quickly ran in to the apartment complex with my 40kg luggage. I waited near some bushes until I heard him drive away and then I went inside my apartment. I phoned my mum to tell her what happened and all my fear exploded and I burst into tears.

I couldn’t understand what I did to be treated that way. I was sleep deprived, I hadn’t showered in over 24 hours, I was wearing my oversized jumper and baggy pants (which I call my garbage pants). There was nothing about me which would signal to the most deluded person I was “ready for a round”. I felt so sick that I could be sexualised and objectified when I just wanted a cab ride to go home. I wrote a complaint to the cab company, and passed on his phone number. I also phoned up to follow up. Even though he kept saying “this is the first time I’ve done something like this, I just feel a real connection with you”, I think that’s bullshit. What scared me more was when I told this to my friends, most of them actually had similar experiences!

Throughout my life I’ve had a number of near death experiences. One of which I fell into a river and was dragged downstream, almost drowning. I was more scared in that cab, than I was drowning in that river. When I was in the river I knew I could survive, I knew I had the strength to pull myself out of the river. In the cab, I was sleep deprived, weak and vulnerable.

  1. What a terrifying experience! I’m glad that you’re safe and that this didn’t get out of control. Play it safe for a while just in case, though. I’d hate for him to come back 😦 I hate that that’s even something that anyone has to worry about.

    1. Thank you πŸ™‚ I’ll be extra careful around where I live now. I feel really stupid that I didn’t think to ask him to stop a few doors down, but I just wanted to get out of the cab 😦 My parents organised for me to go up to Sydney to visit them next week, so I’ll be out of the apartment for at least a week πŸ™‚

      1. Thank goodness πŸ™‚ don’t feel stupid. That’s a stressful situation to be in and ideas don’t always flow quickly. Besides, it’s hard to say that that would have been a good idea anyway. He might have stuck around and then come after you when you didn’t go into a building 😨

    2. I’m so sorry this happened to you! 😦

Fucking creepy guys making advances on you when you can’t escape. I can’t imagine how scared you must have felt.

I’ve got similar experiences but luckily none of them had me in an enclosed room with them. I’ve been harassed at bus stops, subways, train stations though. Whenever a guy makes a pass at me and becomes overall creepy, I just grab my phone and dial anyone I know that would pick up and start talking to them. This way I can let someone know what’s going on with me, and the guy usually leaves me alone.

Sometimes point blank telling them no simply doesn’t work. I’ve tried, oh I’ve tried.

If I’m completely alone with them though, I find the nearest escape route. Had this happen at a buss top at midnight with some drunken dude slurring his words at me and starting to walk towards me. I just started speedwalking to the next stop while dialing my boyfriend and asked him to come pick me up. Ugh.

And now this cab driver knows where you live, that’s even worse. I hope you get him fired.

      1. Oh my gosh that’s awful! I’ll definitely remember the phone tip and use it next time. It honestly does my head in when some people don’t understand that no means no. Like yes please be more creepy and intimidating it’s really going to change my mind! Or maybe some people know that no means no and just don’t care….

I submitted my complaint and all the documents on Friday so there’s gonna be a formal interview during this week. I really hope he gets fired. I’ll also be heading back to Sydney for a week so if he decides to do a creepy drive by I won’t be home :)!

  2. I am sorry to hear you had this awful experience. This man really sound like a creepy pervert. You should stay on guard and be aware of your surroundings. I will keep you in prayers and ask for God to protect you. You are a strong woman and I believe this experience will make you stronger.

    1. So I submitted a formal complaint asap, and had to get all these legal documents signed over the last week. I finished submitting them all yesterday and the complaints officer said they will interview him next week. I really want him to be fired.

      1. So sorry to hear this happened to you! I really hope he does get fired asap!! That was highly unprofessional of him and he’s a scumbag. Absolutely disgusting behaviour. 😑

  3. Oh my God. I am not going to like this post, because seriously what is there to like about a story such as this. It makes me honestly ashamed to be a man at times like these. What an incredibly horrifying experience this was for you. I am so sad that you had to go through something like this. All I can say that I am very glad that you got out safely and I really hope that guy got locked up or at least lost his job. It’s a scary thought that there is someone out there driving cabs that behaves like this. I really hope you are amongst loved ones that can help you get through this allright. Please take care.

    1. Thank you, I really appreciate your kind words. I’ve been feeling really awful about it the last few days, but seeing the support from you and the rest of the blogging community has given me some strength. I submitted my final bit of documentation to the complaints department yesterday, and they’ll be giving him a ‘ formal interview’ on Monday. It’s a shame because even though they pulled the video from the cab, the video doesn’t have any audio! So it’s a my word against his situation. I just really hope he gets fired.

      1. Yeah, that really is a shame. Sounds even stranger especially considering the high tech age we are living in, that something as simple as pulling audio from a video can’t be done. I really hope it all turns out well, and that guy get’s pulled off the streets. As I said before, take good care of yourself, and surround yourself with good friends and family so you don’t have to go through this alone.

      2. I know right! I was very surprised, but as you said as long as he’s off the streets I’ll feel better. Thank you πŸ™‚ I’m heading back up to Sydney to be with family on Thursday !

    1. Thank you ❀ <3! I'm feeling a lot better now, those first few days afterwards I was just a bit in shock. The complaints peeps have finished the investigation and said he'll most likely be fired , so I'm glad he won't be able to do it again.
