Thank God 2017 Is Over ~ My Year in Review

2017 has truly been a year of ups and downs for me, and I’m so glad to see the end of it. I’ve had some really great experiences coupled with some damaging low points in my life. Here’s how my life & blog went in 2017!

The Good

By far, the best thing to happen in 2017 was my trip to Japan! I mainly posted what I did on my other blog –Merry Adventures. It was the trip of a lifetime, I went solo so I could pretty much do what I liked, when I wanted to. Some day I woke up at 8am and was out door ready to explore, others I slept in till 11 and strolled around familiar areas. I also bought way too much stuff. I also began to learn to sew a bit, made some skirts, bags and little knick knacks. I picked up my Japanese classes once again, I’m very much a beginner but step by step I’m getting better and better.

Blog-wise it’s been a pretty incredible year. My number of visitors grew 10x from last year. I also joined OWLS, OWLS is such a positive force within the blogging community. I’ve had some really exciting opportunities like attending Oz Comic-Con and MadFest, interviewing otome developers like Celianna & Anomalis and playing fantastic games like Beyond Eden & Animal Lover. I’ve also upgraded my site from a free one to a premium plan, meaning I can start earning money from ads. I’ve also added a ko-fi and some affiliate links.

The Bad

So anyone who has been following my blog for awhile knows that at the beginning of 2017 I moved to Melbourne. I went down with just my cat (Merry), I wanted to try to be independent, meet some new people and hopefully have an actual life down there. Unfortunately, it really sucked. I struggled to make friends, found the classes I took far too easy and couldn’t really look after myself. Besides the part about the classes, my experience will Melbourne really screwed up my self-confidence and optimistic outlook. I somehow feel a bit colder and angrier at the world than I did before. I moved back to Sydney in mid-November, however shortly after I returned home my grandfather passed away.

There have been some hiccups with my blog. A Facebook page I made for my blog was deleted after someone reported it. I was really upset about this as I had put a lot of time and effort in curating the page, and also encouraging people to like it. I also had about two weeks where none of my posts were showing up on Google search results, and Google was saying they couldn’t index my site.

Plans for 2018

Personal Goals

  • Complete the JLPT N5
  • Sew a dress
  • I say this every year and it never happens but, get fit!

Blogging Goals

  • I’d love to continue to support & feature indie developers on my blog
  • Increase the number of BL posts (at least 2-3/month)
  • Continue seasonal first impression posts + series review posts at the end
  • I’d love to double the amount of visitors!

Thanks again to all my followers & readers for sticking with me throughout 2017, looking forward to the great times we’ll have together in 2018!

  2. Happy new year, my dear. It sounds a little cheesy to say, but even if you don’t feel it right now our bad experiences eventually give us a clearer view of the good, both ahead and behind us. Congratulations on all you accomplished, even when you felt like you’d failed, because it’s all important experience. I hope 2018 brings positive things your way, and I’ll look forward to reading what you write for us all this year.
