A new year means a whole new year of anime series! There’s a few big names like SNK and One Punch Man that are getting new seasons and others like Persona 5 which have a lot of hype surrounding them. But before we can deal with those series we gotta get through winter! As always I’ll be writing up my first impressions of the series I’m interested in and in my final post decide whether to continue. You can check out the full list of winter anime series at Anichart. Just a quick rundown of my voting scales:
0-2: Wow that’s part of my life I’ll never get back
2-3: Reasonable, would need to watch the next one or two episodes to see if it’s worth continuing
4-5: That was absolutely fantastic! Give me the next episode now!
Ahh where do I begin with this one? The name translates as Pop Team Epic and is based off a 4 panel webcomic of the same name. The issue with this series is that you either really love or really dislike it, unfortunately I’m at the latter end. The episode was pretty much 12 minutes of 1 minute gag segments, with two versions one after the other – one with male voices and one with female voices. There’s a bunch of fun referencing which are thrown at you so quickly it becomes a horrible mess. I found myself zoning out while watching the show and playing with my phone. I do question why they decided to make the series 12 x 12 minute episodes when it would have been much more enjoyable to watch one extended gag for 3-5 minutes. 2/5
CardCaptor Sakura: Clear Card
It’s been 20 years since the original Cardcaptor Sakura series was running and now we’ve finally got a sequel! I’ve been waiting for TWENTY YEARS, Gah I feel so old! Unfortunately I feel like this is at least 15 years too late for me. The first episode jumps around all over the place with old characters who I honestly can’t remember, it seems you gotta re-watch the original before watching this. There are also segments that I’m sure I would have found funny as a kid, that I just don’t as an adult. *prepares to get hate for saying this* I honestly really disliked Tomoyo’s character, and I think it’s off-putting enough for me not to watch the rest of the series. I don’t understand why she constantly films Sakura and pretty much stalks her – which is something as a kid you’re just like “okay no worries” but as an adult you want to run screaming for the hills. Also for a 20 year difference the animation didn’t seem to have much of an upgrade. 3/5
Ito Junji: Collection
This was definitely one of my most anticipated anime of this season. The Ito Junji: Collection is essentially the animated versions of the horror manga by one of Japan’s greatest horror mangaka. If you want a quick look at some of his work check out my top 5 Junji Ito One Shot post!
Now, on to the actual anime! The episode introduced us to Souichi which is one of Ito’s recurring characters. Unfortunately, Souichi’s childhood backstory kind of reads like that edgy kid of class who calls everyone ‘sheeple’- not all that interesting. So it wasn’t the most intriguing first episode. While the anime does capture some aspects of the manga well (the facial expressions and the voice acting is great), it does miss out on the pacing and just creepy atmosphere that Ito has with his black and white pages. I will also note that while he is a ‘horror’ writer not all his work is for people to scream and jump in fright. Works like Souichi are more dark comedy and other works are meant to make you unsettled rather than scared. For the actual episode I’ll give it a tentative 3.5/5
So unfortunately it looks like the Winter anime season has gotten off to a rocky start for me. Check back on Wednesday when I’ll be reviewing a few more episodes 🙂 In the meantime subscribe, subscribe, subscribe!
